Summary of Indiana Speech Pathology State License Requirements
Indiana speech pathology licensure requires candidates to have a master’s in speech pathology as well as complete clinical observation hours before license verification. These hours must be completed during a clinical fellowship. In addition, candidates must pass two exams: a Professional Examination Service exam and a Indiana jurisprudence exam with a score of 75 or higher.1

Speech Pathology Initial Licensure for Indiana
According to ASHA, Indiana speech pathology licensure candidates must successfully complete the following criteria before license verification:
- Candidates must have a master’s degree in speech-language pathology (two full years of study in a college with specified coursework).1
- Candidates must complete 400 clock hours of supervised clinical experience.1
- Candidates must finish a nine-month full-time clinical fellowship.1
- Candidates must pass a Professional Examination Service exam.1
- Candidates must also pass an Indiana jurisprudence exam with a score of 75 or higher.1
Candidates may also submit an American Speech-Language Hearing Association Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) or evidence of a national certification in speech-language pathology that is approved by the Board. Also, a renewed license can be issued to an SLP who was licensed by the professional standards board (Department of Education) before July 1, 2005. This person should not be licensed as a speech-language pathologist in Indiana.1
Speech Language Pathology Licensure Exemptions for Indiana
The following individuals are exempt from Indiana speech pathology licensure: physicians, surgeons and their assistants; an individual who has an Indiana speech pathology license from engaging in their licensed profession; federal employees; clinical employees; and a nonresident who either possesses a license in another state or does not have a license but meets the requirements of the profession/1
Reciprocity for Speech Therapists in Indiana
Speech pathology licensure in Indiana can be granted to individuals who are licensed in another state with similar state requirements. Licensure can be given without exam to applicants who are certified as clinically competent. Also, individuals practicing as speech-language pathologists under government authority can be granted a license.1
Interim Practice for Aspiring Speech Pathologists in Indiana
Individuals completing a fellowship can receive a nonrenewable speech pathology license in Indiana. This temporary license will expire upon completion of the fellowship.1
Continuing Education for Speech Language Pathologists in Indiana
Maintaining your speech pathology license in Indiana requires SLPs to complete continuing education hours, and 36 CE hours must be completed per biennial review period. Self-study can be done for continued license verification, but no more than six hours in this area.1
